Jesús Cortés was born in Sevilla, Spain. He comes from an artist family. His maternal great-grandmother was the first gypsy to use her feet like men when tapping, and her husband Manuel Cortés of the Los Canarios family won the national prize in flamenco dancing that back then belonged to Lola' Flores Company. Coming from Sevilla, Jesús Cortes and his family arrived in Barcelona where he started to study dance as a student of La Chana, the successor of Carmen Amaya.
Up to age 7, he started classes in classic Spanish, regional, flamenco, dancing and lessons in music, jazz, and tap dancing with professor Moreno.

In 1983 he studied the Spanish guitar with professor Luís de Abajo.

In 1985 he perfected his dancing studies with professors José de la Vega, Isabel Porcar, Enma Maleras, Rosario and Juan Murillo (the latter is a professor of the Conservatory of Music).

In 1988, with his Company of Dance, he did an artistic tour in France that was organized by the Spanish Consulate.

In 1989 he fused his own shows with the collaboration of the Teresa Guerra Company.

In 1991 he founded his own Academy of  Dance where he taught all kinds of dances, both regional and Spanish ones.

In 1992, when Cortes was 17 years old, he finished his dancing career and became the youngest professor of dance in Spain.
